40 CFR Part 60 Subpart JJJJ

Standards of Performance for Stationary Spark Ignition Internal Combustion Engines

Subpart JJJJ sets emission standards for stationary spark ignition (SI) internal combustion engines. It applies to manufacturers who certify engines and to owners and operators of stationary SI engines, covering emission standards, other requirements, compliance requirements, and testing. The subpart includes tables that specify NOₓ, CO, and VOC emission standards for non-emergency and emergency engines by horsepower, fuel type, and manufacture date, as well as performance-test methods and which General Provisions and mobile-source certification rules apply.

§ 60.4230(a)

This subpart applies to manufacturers, owners, and operators of stationary spark ignition internal combustion engines (SI ICE) in six categories: manufacturers of engines 25 HP or smaller made on or after July 1, 2008; manufacturers of engines larger than 25 HP that are gasoline-fueled or rich-burn LPG-fueled made on or after July 1, 2008 (or January 1, 2009 for emergency engines); manufacturers of engines larger than 25 HP that are not gasoline or rich-burn LPG and that participate in the voluntary certification program, with manufacture dates ranging from July 1, 2007 to January 1, 2009 depending on size and type; owners and operators of SI ICE that began construction after June 12, 2006 and were manufactured on or after dates that range from July 1, 2007 to January 1, 2009 depending on size and type; owners, operators, and anyone who modifies or reconstructs any SI ICE after June 12, 2006; and all owners and operators of SI ICE that began construction after June 12, 2006 for purposes of § 60.4236. For this subpart, construction commences on the date the engine is ordered by the owner or operator.

§ 60.4230(a)(1)

Manufacturers of stationary spark ignition internal combustion engines rated at 25 HP (19 kW) or less are subject to this subpart if the engine was manufactured on or after July 1, 2008.

§ 60.4230(a)(2)

This subpart applies to manufacturers of stationary spark ignition engines greater than 19 kilowatts (25 horsepower) that are either gasoline fueled or rich burn engines fueled by liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), if the engine was manufactured on or after July 1, 2008, or on or after January 1, 2009 for emergency engines.

§ 60.4230(a)(3)

This subpart applies to manufacturers of stationary spark ignition engines greater than 19 kW (25 HP) that are not gasoline-fueled and not rich-burn LPG engines, if the manufacturer participates in the voluntary certification program, with effective dates depending on engine size and type: on or after July 1, 2007 for engines 500 HP or greater (except lean burn engines 500 HP or greater and less than 1,350 HP); on or after January 1, 2008 for lean burn engines 500 HP or greater and less than 1,350 HP; on or after July 1, 2008 for engines less than 500 HP; and on or after January 1, 2009 for emergency engines.
